Organic Ground covers
Using mulch in your garden offers many benefits to your vegetables, flowers, fruits and to you.
A mulch is simply a layer of material that is spread on top of the soil around the base of you plants, shrubs or trees. Mulch can be either organic or inorganic. Organic mulch is made up of organic matter such as wood chips, sawdust, straw, hay, newspaper or magazine strips, bark, leaves or grass clippings.
Adding mulch to your garden has many benefits. Mulch: prevents soil erosion; conserves water and reduces the need to water your plants often. Mulching provides for more even ground temperature, discourages weed growth; and gives your garden a neater, more organized appearance.
Organic mulching materials perform double duty as first, a protective layer and, secondly as nourishment for your plants. As the organic mulch, breaks down, it releases vital nutrients into the soil, making them accessible to the plants.
